When we named our original 20-21 Season, A New Era begins, this is certainly not the inaugural season I was expecting, something about using the time to pivot, collaborate and crystalize with the Symphony, the many initiatives in our future.

And keeping orchestral music alive and relevant to everyone in our wider community - something that seems ever-important during these challenging times etc etc.

Keep The Music Playing

Strong and enduring cultural institutions differentiate a great city from a good one. An orchestra, theater or museum can be a catalyst, building a vibrant community that is attractive for everyone. As a leading arts institution in Fairfield County, the Stamford Symphony seeks to provide transformative musical experiences by the finest musicians in the tri-state region.

We do this in an equitable and inclusive way, free of barriers that could exclude anyone. Great music should be something that brings us together as a community, to be transported, to experience joy and to celebrate life.

In 2020, we enter a new era as Michael Stern begins his tenure as Music Director. Michael brings a formidable track record of leadership at the highest artistic level from his many years as Music Director of the Kansas City Symphony as well as his experience at many other top level orchestras around the world.

Community &
Education

Reflecting More Diversity in our Programming to engage our region’s rich and growing cultural diversity, develop programs that reach across musical boundaries and bridge cultural divides.

Building and Growing Education Programs with stronger partnerships in public schools and music schools throughout the region to enable us to reach a more diverse group of future musicians and audience members through our core education programs including MusiKids, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute’s Link-Up program, instrument bootcamps, masterclass and mentoring partnership with the HARTT School of Music, Exploring the Orchestra Series for pre-school age children and many more unique partnerships.

Engaging Younger Audiences by engaging with the burgeoning millennial population in Stamford. Comprising more than 31% of the city’s residents, we will expand our ability to meet them where they are – at our city’s finest breweries and wineries as we continue our Symphony On Tap and Symphony Uncorked events.

Developing Lifelong Learning Opportunities in partnership with libraries and other local learning organizations.

Investing in
our Musicians

At the heart of our organization are the 65 musicians, many of whom have played with the Stamford Symphony for over 30 years. Our musicians are among the finest professional orchestral players anywhere in the world – they also perform on the stages of New York’s major orchestras and ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Pops, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and on Broadway.

Longer term goals include:

Growing our Orchestra to explore a broader repertoire while enjoying a full and rich orchestral sound by engaging more musicians, especially strings.

Adding Extra Rehearsals including Friday dress rehearsals to our Palace Theatre home, open to our audience so they may experience the preparation of a concert first-hand.
